Type 26 Frigate Reaches Fresh Milestone

Type 26 Frigate Reaches Fresh Milestone

Construction has begun on the 57th – and final – segment of the HMS Glasgow, the first of eight Type 26 frigates being built at the BAE Glasgow Shipyard. And it has also been announced the two yards are also progressing at pace on 15 ships for Canada and nine for Australia.

As work began on the final section of the ship, another £100m of contracts were confirmed in the vast supply chain needed to build the world’s most advanced submarine hunter.

The latest £100m investment will help support a further 250 jobs in the UK, and raise the total workforce involved in the future frigate programme to over 4,000. With the UK Government committed to all eight frigates being build in the Glasgow yard, alongside the work for international programmes, this represents three decades of work being supported in the Glasgow area.

The eight Type 26 frigates will be named after the UK’s greatest cities – with HMS Glasgow being the first completed.
